HerFilms: Movies to Fuel Your Feminist Fire

I’ve been there—sometimes you just need a cozy night in, but you still want a spark of inspiration. Well, why not let that spark come from some fierce women on the big screen? I’m talking about movies that don’t just entertain but also remind us how powerful, resilient, and unstoppable women can be. So, let’s get that popcorn ready and dive into my favorite picks for a feminist movie night!

For the History Lovers:

  • Hidden Figures (2016): You can’t help but feel inspired by this one. It’s about three brilliant Black women who broke barriers at NASA during the space race. It’s a beautiful mix of intelligence, resilience, and breaking down prejudice.

  • Suffragette (2015): This movie takes you straight into the early 1900s, where women fought for the right to vote. The story of their courage and sacrifice is truly humbling.

  • On the Basis of Sex (2018): The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a trailblazer for gender equality. Watching her fight legal battles that shaped the future for women’s rights is nothing short of empowering.

For the Conversator:

  • Women Talking (2022): This thought-provoking drama explores a group of Mennonite women grappling with a series of sexual assaults within their community. It's a powerful story of resilience, faith, and the importance of female solidarity.

  • Monster (2003): This biographical crime drama tells the story of Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer who preyed on men along Florida highways. Charlize Theron delivers a phenomenal performance in this gritty and disturbing film.

For a Warrior Princess Vibe:

  • Wonder Woman (2017): No list would be complete without Diana, the Amazonian warrior who proves that kindness and strength are equally powerful. She’s the superhero we all need in our lives.

  • The Woman King (2022): Viola Davis commands the screen as a fierce leader of an all-female warrior unit. While the historical accuracy may not be 100%, the spirit of female empowerment shines through every scene.

For the Dreamers and Doers:

  • The Devil Wears Prada (2006): Navigating the fast-paced, cutthroat world of fashion while staying true to yourself? Yes, please. This movie is a funny yet poignant reminder that you can stand tall even in the toughest environments.

  • Joy (2015): Ever heard of those velvet hangers that are all the rage? Joy Mangano invented them, and this movie about her life is all about entrepreneurial grit, creativity, and perseverance.

  • Erin Brockovich (2000): Julia Roberts plays a single mom who takes on a massive corporation in this real-life story. Erin’s journey shows that even when the odds seem insurmountable, persistence and passion win.

For a Good Laugh:

  • Bridesmaids (2011): This one never gets old. It’s all about the chaos, joy, and undeniable strength that comes with female friendships. Plus, it’s hilarious!

For the Animated Heroine:

  • Moana (2016): Who says animated movies are just for kids? Moana’s journey of self-discovery and bravery is a beautiful reminder to embrace your heritage and chart your own course in life.

These are just a few of the incredible films that fuel my feminist fire and remind me of the power we hold as women. What about you? Who are your favorite strong female movie characters? Drop your picks in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
